The Institute for Systems Medicine is a private, not-for-profit institute designed to increase the biomedical research
capacity of Spokane by developing integrated research infrastructure to support and attract researchers. In achieving
this mission, the ISM and its partner institutions will drive new discoveries and innovations to improve human health
and catalyze economic development.
The ISM is currently developing two core functions to support research; the Spokane Community Clinical Data
Repository (SCCDR) and the Spokane Bio-specimen Repository (SBR).
Overview
The future of biomedical research is predictive and personalized
medicine. Researchers in the medical and academic fields need a
collaborative and accessible infrastructure to generate resources. The
Institute for Systems Medicine is the foundation to build biomedical
research capacity in the Inland Northwest.
Business Strategy
The Institute for Systems Medicine is poised to serve the
anticipated growth of the biomedical research sector of the Inland
Northwest. The integration of the Spokane Community Clinical Data
Repository, the Spokane Bio-Specimen Repository and critical community
education provide a sustainable system that will provide increased economic
impact over time.
Integration
It is necessary that Institute for
Systems Medicine infrastructure components be integrated to realize its full
potential. The Spokane Community Clinical Data Repository (SCCDR) aggregates
clinical data and the Spokane Bio-Specimen Repository (BSR) generates access
to a variety of biological data. New discoveries in medicine are
increasingly reliant on a researcher’s ability to have access to both
clinical data that describes a state of disease as well as biological data.
These components create a foundation to enrich biomedical research capacity
in the Inland Northwest.
Local Impact
The Institute for Systems Medicine supports and provides critical
resources to local researchers and their projects, with special emphasis
upon initiatives that recruit and retain researchers in the Inland
Northwest.
Economic Development
With its focused mission, the Institute
for Systems Medicine accelerates local and regional economic development.
The Institute for Systems Medicine is part of the Inland Northwest’s
biomedical ecosystem, providing the necessary tools to enhance basic and
applied research at local academic and healthcare delivery institutions.
Healthcare
Ultimately, the Institute for Systems Medicine will improve the
healthcare of our community by driving new discoveries in medicine and
innovating improvements to human health.
