What Is ISM?

The Institute for Systems Medicine (ISM) is a private, not-for-profit institute designed to improve human health through a unique, focused pursuit of biomedical research driven by world-class scientists and locally translated into patient applications. As a result of this mission, the ISM will play an important role in the creation of a local knowledge-based economy, acting as an economic engine in cooperation with its partners to stimulate discovery and commercialization. As part of this vision for the ISM, the institute will:

Differentiate itself through a unique focus on epigenomics and systems biology aimed at predictive medicine
Attract leading scientific, academic, and business talent to Eastern Washington
Advance a relevant research agenda based upon local health issues leading to earlier diagnostics and better therapeutics
Foster entrepreneurial business development by focusing on rapid technological commercialization of institute discoveries via local business formation
Inspire a new generation of scientists through interactive K- 20 programs
Strengthen partner organizations through the collaboration of resources and competencies
Drive economic development in Eastern Washington through job creation and expansion Improve global health through purpose-driven research relevant to modern human disease
